Carolyn was my much older cousin (probably by 7 years) and due to her father's occupation as Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, her family was assigned to locations far from my childhood home in Charleston, WV. It was always a big deal when her family came to visit, I suppose because her father was my father's oldest and esteemed brother. Since I was younger than my siblings and many of my cousins, I was accustomed to being thought of as somewhat lesser than the olders who were more experienced. Carolyn was the exception because she made me feel special by taking the time to talk with me and she was kind to me in a way that caused me to feel important.
Carolyn was only slightly older than my brother, and as teenagers, I suppose it was natural that they enjoyed teasing each other. But the memory I have of her that I most enjoy is the great fun she had by teasing my brother when she sewed his top bed sheet to the bottom sheet, making it impossible for him to get in bed. Actually we all got a big kick out of that!
The passing years and geographically distant locations that separated us made it very unusual to see Carolyn or her family, and the last time I was with her was in the late 1980's when she and her son and her mother were visiting my parents. I recall that when we approached to greet each other Carolyn moved her hand out to me and I pushed it aside so I could hug her and said "we can do better than a handshake!" Carolyn's face lit up with pleasure!
When I think of cousin Carolyn I have fond memories of a wonderful person. It is indeed sad that we never got to know one another as adults because we lived so far away. But I believe that it's fair to say that kindness was a quality that she carried throughout her life. Her life of faith in Jesus has taken her to the final resting place we call heaven where she is experiencing tranquility, peace and joy in the presence of her God and with Christ Jesus. Well done Carolyn!
